Cloister of Elne - Elne Cathedral of Saint Eulalia and Saint Julia
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Dominating the vast Roussillon plain from its oppidum, Elne was the ancient religious and historical capital of the region. This thousand-year-old town is home to two exceptional heritage gems: the Sainte-Eulalie-et-Sainte-Julie Cathedral, built in the 11th century in a powerful Romanesque style, and its adjoining cloister, a true masterpiece of Roussillon art.
Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, the white marble cloister is a rare example of the evolution of Romanesque sculpture towards Gothic. Its sculpted galleries recount, through a rich iconography, biblical stories, the daily life of the canons, and symbols of Mediterranean nature. Each capital is a work of art in its own right, blending refinement, spirituality, and observation of the natural world.
A place of silence, light, and contemplation, the cloister of Elne illustrates the importance of the episcopal see that flourished here for centuries. Visiting this majestic site immerses one in the spiritual soul of Roussillon, between heaven and earth, art and history.
