Château de la Durbelière
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
The romantic remains of the castle where Henri de la Rochejaquelein was born. The first fortification dates back to the fifteenth century, before being remodeled in the early seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At the end of the eighteenth century, it passed to the Vergier de la Rochejaquelin family. Henri de La Rochejaquelein, who was a general in the Catholic and Royal Army during the Vendée Wars , resided here. This led to the castle being burned down five times between 1793 and 1794 , explaining its current state of ruin. A one-kilometer private road, its entrance gate, its large, majestic courtyard bordered by imposing outbuildings, its dovecotes, its lush orchard, its shimmering ponds, the traces of the repeatedly burned castle, and its rich history make this an exceptional site that deserves to be explored. Open on Heritage Days weekend, self-guided tour.
