The Dungeon of Huriel
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Located in the Allier region, the Huriel keep is one of the few well-preserved examples of feudal architecture in central France. An imposing vestige of the former fortified castle of the lords of Huriel , it was once surrounded by deep moats, which were still visible until the mid-20th century.
Construction of the complex began at the end of the 11th century and was completed towards the end of the 12th century, entirely using local granite, a material that was both robust and symbolic of regional identity. In the 15th and 16th centuries, four cylindrical towers were added, two of which still remain today.
The keep, rectangular in plan (12 meters by 10), rises to a height of 33 meters. This configuration, relatively rare in France, is found mainly in the western regions and the Loire Valley. This remarkable monument illustrates the transition between medieval fortresses and later lordly residences .
