International Maritime Center - The Royal Rope Factory
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
A 17th-century factory, the Royal Rope Factory, built from 1666 by François Blondel (architect to the king), is a 374 m long building, on the banks of the Charente, below the King's garden.
From 1669 to 1862, this factory produced all the ropes needed for the ships built in the Rochefort arsenal.
The International Maritime Centre occupies one-third of the building. The permanent exhibition, "The Rope Factory: A Life of Workshops," reveals the secrets of rope making and the art of nautical knots with our rope makers. The temporary exhibition is dedicated to the worlds of the sea.
