Royal Castle of Collioure
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Where the Mediterranean meets the Pyrenees, Collioure embraces diversity.
A trading port and a stronghold unite within the walls of this monument.
The Royal Castle of Collioure proudly stands on the water's edge, like a centuries-old guardian of the Vermilion Coast. This iconic monument, steeped in the turbulent history of Roussillon, is much more than a fortress: it embodies the very soul of Collioure.
Built on a rocky promontory, the castle has witnessed the passing of centuries, kingdoms, and empires. By turns a Visigothic fortress, the residence of the Kings of Majorca in the 13th century, and a strategic bastion under Charles V and Vauban, it has preserved, within its ramparts and courtyards, the traces of the great Mediterranean powers. Its exceptional location between sea and mountains has made it a first-rate military site, but also a place of exchange, culture, and encounter.
Visitors are immediately captivated by the breathtaking panorama the castle offers of the Bay of Collioure, the town's colorful rooftops, and the Albères mountains. Inside, the understated stone contrasts with the bright southern light, and the exhibitions held in the historic halls reinforce the connection between historical heritage and contemporary art.
The Royal Castle invites visitors to explore the rich history of the Mediterranean, a blend of Catalan, Spanish, and French influences. A living fortress, at the heart of a town where land and sea, past and present, resonate in harmony.
The Royal Castle is as inseparable from Collioure as the town itself is from the sea.
