Chiré-en-Montreuil Castle

Built in the 14th century on a rocky spur, the Château de Chiré-en-Montreuil overlooks the valley and offers a remarkable panorama. This imposing fortress, flanked by five towers, features a massive gatehouse, once equipped with a drawbridge.

The enclosure forms a rectangular courtyard where a well and an old cellar remain, witnesses to medieval daily life. The whole is surrounded by dry moats carved into the rock.
The gun ports, culverins and firing posts still visible indicate that the castle benefited from defensive reinforcement around the 16th century, probably in response to tensions related to the Wars of Religion.
