Dieppe Castle-Museum

Ivory in Dieppe is steeped in the history of sailors, those who, since the 16th century, have been seeking it on the African coast. Unloaded from the ships, the ivory went directly to the workshops of the ivory carvers.

More than 250 artisans worked with this exquisite material in the 18th century. The finest pieces, crafted by the most talented artists, found their way to Paris.

The castle-museum (14th-20th centuries), perched atop the cliff overlooking the sea, houses one of the world's finest collections of ivory (1,200 pieces), most of which were carved in Dieppe itself, from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
