The area around Château-Larcher has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by a remarkable dolmen on the Thorus plateau (a hamlet adjacent to the village), the last remaining vestige of a Celtic necropolis containing at least a thousand tombs. Furthermore, Château-Larcher is located near the ancient Roman road, the Via Pictavia, which ran from Poitiers to Civray. Therefore, it is not surprising that a Gallo-Roman altar, sculpted with a god from the Roman pantheon on each of its four sides, was discovered in Baptresse (part of the commune of Château-Larcher).
