Montfort Castle
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
A unique architectural gem, the residence of prominent noble and royal families.
Montfort Castle housed the Shroud of Turin in the 15th century. It was listed as a Historical Monument in 1925.
This fortified castle, with its rare architecture, was built in the 11th century and partially rebuilt in the 13th century. Its majestic ruins, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the road between Montbard and Semur, its defensive wall, its beautiful façade with three semi-octagonal towers, its 28-meter well, and its tower imbued with the memory of Princess Amélie, all bear witness to the powerful noble and royal families who resided here until the French Revolution. The Shroud of Turin was kept here twice, from 1360 to 1388 and from 1418 to 1438.
Restoration work is carried out by the MONS FORTI association (220 members).
