Exceptional Chateaus & Castles

Our history

In 1232, Count Thomas I of Savoy acquired part of the town from Viscount Berlion, Lord of Chambéry. Then, in 1295, Amadeus V, Count of Savoy, purchased the Château de Chambéry. Even today, the exact location of La Poype, the first castle building (mid-15th century), isolated on the Montjay hill by a branch of the Albane River, remains difficult to determine.

From the late 13th century onward, considerable works were undertaken, including raising the level of the fortified hill, constructing the gatehouse buildings, and, during the 14th and 15th centuries, those surrounding the current main courtyard.

In 1408, Count Amadeus VIII, the future first Duke of Savoy, decided to erect a chapel which, from 1502, housed the Shroud of Turin and took the name Sainte-Chapelle. However, in 1532, a fire severely damaged it and destroyed part of the Old Pavilion. The castle then became the residence of the prince's itinerant court: the "Hôtel de Savoie." While retaining its role as a fortress, it also became the seat of the administration (Treasury of Charters, Resident Council, Chamber of Accounts).
