Dom Brial Vineyards and Cellars
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
Born in 1743 in Baixas, Dom Michel-Jean-Joseph Brial was a Benedictine monk with an exceptional career. After joining Versailles, he became the confessor of Queen Marie Antoinette and played a key role as the first ambassador of Baixas wines at the King's Court.
In 1805, he was appointed a member of the Institut de France (Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres), a recognition of his erudition. Deeply attached to his native village, Dom Brial founded a free school for the children of Baixas before his death and bequeathed an annual income of 600 francs to the municipality. This endowment was intended to cover the teachers' salaries, provided they taught French to their students.
