Our history

First mentioned in 1271 in a document detailing the possessions of Philip III the Bold in the Agenais region, the current Château de Bonaguil owes its splendor to Bérenger de Roquefeuil (1448-1530), a powerful feudal lord of Quercy, who transformed it into one of the most formidable fortresses in the kingdom.

Purchased in the 18th century by Marguerite de Fumel, the noble residence was further embellished, taking on a less austere appearance, which the Revolution would ultimately destroy through the partial destruction of symbols deemed too aristocratic.

In 1860, the municipality of Fumel acquired the site and continues its patronage to this day, giving the many visitors who come each year the opportunity to discover a remarkable medieval ensemble in a state of preservation unique in France (barbican, keep, living quarters, caponier, chicane, casemate, vaulted ceiling, etc.).
