Our history
Perched on the rocks overlooking the Nizonne River, Bernardières has stood the test of time. Watchtower or outpost, it mattered little to Bertrand du Guesclin, who drove the English from it in September 1377. Far from the turmoil of the Hundred Years' War, Antoine d'Authon had little time to rest. Traveler, adventurer, Turkish pirate, his story is intertwined with the legends of old. Centuries passed, and the echo of the forge's hammer resounded within these walls, bringing wealth and glory. The Counts of Aydie enlarged the castle and built the terraces. Listed as a Historic Monument and restored by its owners for over fifty years, it is recovering from the ravages of the past and discovering a tranquility its stones had never known.
Visit duration: approximately 1 hour. July, August, and early September, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Closed on Tuesdays.
