Our history

"The most beautiful Romanesque choir in France" (Daniel Rops).

Visible from afar, the Basilica of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire bears witness to the flourishing of Romanesque art in the Loire Valley during the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries. The building's construction is centered on the body of Saint Benedict, whose relics form its foundation stone.

Since 1944, a monastic community living according to the Rule of Saint Benedict has once again maintained a vibrant presence in this important spiritual center.
