Our history
Aubigny-sur-Nère: A Scottish town in Berry
A former royal town fortified by Philip Augustus, Aubigny-sur-Nère became the City of the Stuarts in the 15th century. Indeed, the future Charles VII offered the lordship of Aubigny in 1423 to John Stuart of Darnley , constable of the Scottish army and cousin of the King of Scotland, to thank him for the valuable help given against the English, by virtue of the treaty of the Auld Alliance.
In the 16th century , Béraud and Robert Stuart built the castle, while a devastating fire in 1512 forced the lords to draw on their own forests to rebuild the town. From this resilience arose the magnificent half-timbered houses that today give Aubigny its unique charm.
Since 1990, Aubigny-sur-Nère has reconnected with its Scottish past during the unmissable Franco-Scottish Festival . The town resounds with the sound of bagpipes, between pipe band parades, Highland games and medieval markets, fervently celebrating a historic friendship that spans centuries.
