Our history

Standing facing the ocean, the Château d'Antoine d'Abbadie was built by Viollet-le-Duc . A Neo-Gothic masterpiece, richly decorated, this building bears the mark of its owner's Orientalist passion. Antoine d'Abbadie (1810-1897) established an astronomical observatory there, enabling teams of observers to compile star catalogs. A great traveler, he created the first map of Ethiopia . He was also a fervent advocate for the Basque language and culture, to which he remained deeply attached.
