Angles on the Anglin

In one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France," the ruins of a 12th-century castle stand proudly on a rocky promontory overlooking the Anglin River. Stairs lead to a chapel offering a beautiful panoramic view of the Anglin Valley. Below the terrace lies the Sainte-Croix district with its superb flat-tiled houses and the Romanesque church of Sainte-Croix. Also worth discovering: the village of Angles, and the "Jours d'Angles" workshop (delicate drawn thread embroidery), which boasts a rich history, as under Napoleon III, more than 300 women workers supplied Parisian department stores. Nearby: the Abbey of Saint-Savin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its 12th-century murals, and the thermal spa of La Roche-Posay with its many activities.
