Our history
Founded in 1068, Saint-Vincent Abbey benefited from the protection of the Dukes of Aquitaine. Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was reportedly born in Nieul in 1122, granted it the status of a royal abbey while she was Queen of France. Despite the destruction wrought by the Wars of Religion, the abbey is one of the few Romanesque monastic complexes in Lower Poitou to have preserved its abbey church, cloister, and conventual buildings almost intact.
