Saint-Georges de Boscherville Abbey
Exceptional Chateaus & Castles
Our history
The beautiful Romanesque church and its array of historiated capitals.
For over eight centuries, a sanctuary was dedicated to a Celtic deity... But this past was buried in the 7th century beneath a chapel dedicated to Saint George. Then, in the 11th century, the Grand Chamberlain Raoul de Tancarville founded a collegiate church of canons, which was succeeded by the Benedictine monastery that now welcomes you to its gardens and abbey church.
A luminous edifice, let yourself be bathed in the light of an architecture whose Romanesque harmony rests on the purity of its lines and the whiteness of its stones: an exceptional and wondrous work. See, for example, the "Making of Saint George" at the east end: a strange, perhaps even counterfeit, figure! For the abbey never had the privilege of minting coins.
The column-statues in the chapter house are less ambiguous: Death the throat-slitter, Eternal Life, and the wisdom of Saint Benedict giving his sons the rule that leads from one to the other... The monks, moreover, knew many holy and wholesome remedies. Visit their garden, and you will discover the secret of the plants, flowers, and aromas that soothe ailments and enchant the soul.
