Our history

All the beauty of classicism at the heart of the Liturgy of the Hours.
Mondaye, a green hill flowing with springs. In the local dialect, it was called Mont d'Aë: meaning Mount of Water. In the Latin of charters, it was written Mons Deï: meaning Mount of God.
At the dawn of the 13th century, a few hermits lived there. Premonstratensian canons joined them. This was the genesis of the abbey. Mondaye is 800 years old. Mondaye is not as old as its walls.
Rebuilt in the 18th century, a masterpiece of classicism and the Counter-Reformation, Mondaye possesses the beauty of angels who, from the floor to the dome of the transept, and from the Parisot organ case to the Assumption in the side chapel, animate its church with a celestial echo. See and hear how, with their wings, they carry in harmony the voices of the canons singing the psalms.

Everything here rings true, to the eye, the ear, and the soul, for the master craftsman was as much a religious man among his brothers as he was an architect and painter. Eustache Restout, servant of God and artisan of Beauty. This is how he depicted himself, holding his palette and wearing the white habit of the Premonstratensians. This is the same habit worn by the canons who will welcome you today.
