Our history

Romanesque grandeur resurrected from the very depths of ruin. Romanesque stones and schist roofs: you are standing before a "miracle." Lessay, "of nobility and grandeur. I have seen nothing closer to the grandeur and simplicity of antiquity." Yet the author of this praise had traveled every path of heritage. Mérimée, Inspector General of Historical Monuments. And yet, a century later, astonishment and collapse: struck by the lightning of the summer of 1944, the church was nothing but ruins. Fallen splendor, not lost. For the work of restoration carried out here is matched only by the marvel, stone by stone, rebuilt in a poignant "identical" manner. You who enter this place, see and listen… This melodious resonance of clean lines, this vibrant harmony of soaring arches, this pure echo of light filtering through each bay via stained-glass windows freely inspired by Irish illuminated manuscripts. Lessay is a hymn to Romanesque beauty . An abbey founded in 1056. For ever and ever. And if the convent wing, which became private property during the Revolution, is closed to you by a fence, remember that it was so in the time of the monks.
