Our history

Founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard, Fontenay Abbey remains as intact as it was in its early days. Its current reputation reflects its former spiritual influence. An ideal, secluded city nestled in the woods, it provided everything the monks needed for their intellectual and physical pursuits. This masterpiece of Romanesque art rigorously embodies the rule of the Cistercian order.
The Abbey has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
