Our history
Formerly the medieval Premonstratensian abbey of Saint-Broing , the current buildings were erected in the early 18th century. From the 12th century onwards, canons of the Premonstratensian order settled in Corneux. The French Revolution brought an end to the Premonstratensian presence in Corneux (1790). The abbey was transformed into a château following its sale as national property. The current buildings, erected in the early 18th century, were restored in the 1980s. Inside, there is the former refectory, kitchen, chapel, cloister, grand staircase, and part of the former abbot's residence. Having belonged to the lords of Beaujeu, it served as a fief for the canons and is built on marshland. The Château de Corneux includes a kitchen and refectory, which together form the outbuildings, a cloister, a chapel, a chapter house, a bakery, and a staircase leading to the lord's residence. The refectory displays a collection of terracotta objects and pots. Special care has been taken with the estate since 1982, allowing visitors to rediscover the manor's original features. Visitors can admire the estate's orangery, its glass roof, its roof, the service entrance with its canopy, the exterior plasterwork of the abbey, the interior floors, and the chestnut shingles. The church, rebuilt in the heart of the estate, features a polychrome stucco bas-relief , a large altarpiece, a 17th-century polychrome wooden crucifix, and a wrought-iron communion table. Classified as a historical monument in 1975, the château has been open to the public since 1989. The building is situated in the heart of a verdant park designed in a style typical of the Franche-Comté region.
