Abbey Church of Our Lady of Bernay

So simply, so wonderfully Romanesque. In the 150 years following the Revolution, the Abbey Church, founded by Judith of Brittany , suffered numerous indignities. For example, one arm of the transept was removed to make way for a street. This "authentic" apse had to be rebuilt after the building was listed as a historical monument in 1962. Today, everything breathes once again in unison with a Romanesque soul, in this church where the robustness of the piers, the grace of the semicircular vaults, and the poetry of the sculpted capitals harmonize. A thousand years of prayer are engraved in stone here. Meanwhile, the convent buildings, rebuilt in the 17th century and now used for administration, invite a stroll through the square. It is undoubtedly from this beautifully landscaped garden that you can best appreciate the sumptuous and classical arrangement of their façade.
