The documented routes are available in French, English, German and Dutch, to discover the fortifications of the first two enclosures of the castle.
Note: During guided tours (approximately 30 minutes), the ticket office is temporarily closed.

The Château de Mauzun illustrates the evolution of medieval defence in the 13th century, where the design of fortifications was revolutionized to counter the growing power of siege engines.
An innovative fortified defense:
Mauzun Castle represents a typical example of early 13th-century fortification, a period marked by the importance of fortified enclosures for defense. Rather than focusing on residential use, as was the case in earlier castles, Mauzun emphasized robust defense. The castle comprises three concentric enclosures, offering a complex and strategically designed structure to maximize resistance against attack.
Impressive fortifications:
The fortress comprises a system of ramparts with a perimeter of 900 meters, with 16 regularly spaced towers. The keep, or third enclosure, is an imposing square of black stone, forming a self-contained citadel capable of defending itself independently of the other structures.
An active and innovative defense:
Mauzun's design emphasizes active defense, with continuous lines of fire allowing the garrison to effectively protect every corner of the castle. The first two enclosures feature loopholes, crenellated parapet walks, and underground galleries, offering great mobility and optimal defense against attackers.
The Château de Mauzun is thus a fascinating example of medieval ingenuity in defence, allowing you to travel through time and discover the military strategies that marked this era.
Prices and visiting days:
The Château de Mauzun is open to the public during the following periods:
- From May 1st to July 14th : open on Sundays and public holidays, from 2:30pm to 7pm.
- From July 15th to August 31st : open every day except Monday, from 2:30pm to 7pm.
- In September : open on Sundays and during Heritage Days, from 2:30 pm to 7 pm.
Guided tours of the dungeon are offered at 3pm, 4:30pm, and 6pm. Last entry is at 6pm.

Mauzun Castle
Mauzun Perched in an amphitheater of Auvergne mountains, the Château de Mauzun presents a striking silhouette of its gigantic ruins on the edge of the Livradois region.
Visible from afar, the fortress crowns the hill of an ancient Auvergne volcano, from which it draws its black stone.
The castle lies at the heart of the defensive system: protected below by two successive walls, the castle complex comprises 20 towers and 1,600 meters of curtain walls.
It covers an area of 5 hectares.
The fortified castle of Mauzun is one of the most important fortresses in Europe; it is the Giant of Auvergne.
At the time of its construction in the 13th century, the fortress of Mauzun represented the pinnacle of military architecture.
Even today, its high, jagged towers reveal to us the secrets of the defense and survival methods employed by medieval castles. Located near Billom, 25km east of Clermont-Ferrand, the Château de Mauzun is a major tourist attraction in the Puy-de-Dôme and Auvergne regions. A listed historical monument open to the public, it undergoes regular restoration work to stabilize the ruins and improve access.
