Louppy-sur-Loison Castle - Cultural Visits

A must-see site in Lorraine, in Louppy-sur-Loison. What to see and do at the Château de Louppy-sur-Loison:

The castle boasts richly decorated architecture and a history marked by its military and defensive role. Several elements of the site bear witness to its fascinating past, including:

  • The First Courtyard : This courtyard holds great historical significance. Formerly, the buildings housed a regiment of cavalry, providing the main defense for the castle. The other defensive structures, while present, were more symbolic of the military role of Simon II de Pouilly. At the center of this courtyard stands the largest dovecote in the department. In those days, dovecotes were not only symbols of the extent of the seigneurial lands, but also essential food stores, crucial during periods of unexpected influx of visitors.
Above the stables, a superb sculpture of a horse, "the king of animals", recalls the grandeur of these mounts, once essential to the defence of the castle.

  • The Park : The park-side gate is decorated with sculptures on various themes. The central wing is distinguished by its stone color and the shape of its roofs, a consequence of successive works and restorations that have altered the original architecture of the castle.
The richly ornamented main portal features a war relief in a band and figures representing the four elements, illustrating the power and symbolism of the place.
The chapel houses the tombstone of the abbess of Juvigny-sur-Loison, who was an important figure among the Benedictine nuns and possessed the relics of Saint Scholastica, the twin sister of Saint Benedict.

  • The Inner Courtyard or Court of Honor : This courtyard is distinguished by its remarkable sculptural richness. The scenes adorning the walls are the work of several schools of sculpture. They are largely inspired by the engravings of Salomon, a 15th-century artist, who himself drew inspiration from Ovid's Metamorphoses.

Louppy-sur-Loison Castle

Louppy sur Loison

This 17th-century château was built for Simon II de Pouilly, military governor of Steany, on behalf of the Duchy of Lorraine. During the wars, the château suffered considerable damage. During the First World War, it was first subjected to organized looting by the German army. During the Second World War, Louppy was occupied and used as a prisoner-of-war camp.
Louppy's architectural interest lies primarily in its elaborately sculpted gates and porches (the stables gate, the château entrance, the dovecote, etc.).
